As we move closer to AGI, the ethical implications and safety requirements become paramount. "Capabilities" without "Control" is a recipe for disaster.
Core Safety Principles
1. Value Alignment
The process of ensuring that the AGI's goals are consistent with human values. This is difficult because human values are often unstated, contradictory, and evolve over time.
2. Robustness and Reliability
The system must be "fail-safe." If a reasoning step goes wrong or sensory input is corrupted, the system should degrade gracefully rather than taking catastrophic actions.
3. Transparency and Interpretability
We must be able to understand why an AGI made a decision. This is why the Symbolic and Neuro-symbolic parts of Hyperon are so critical—they provide a "reasoning trace."
4. Human-in-the-Loop
For high-stakes decisions (medical, legal, military), a human should always be part of the decision-making process.
Ethical Challenges
- Job Displacement: Planning for the economic transition as AI automates complex cognitive tasks.
- Bias: Ensuring that knowledge bases like AtomSpace don't mirror and amplify societal biases.
- Agency: Deciding what level of autonomy an AGI should have and who is responsible for its actions.
- Access: Preventing AGI from becoming a tool used exclusively by a small elite to the detriment of the majority.
